Retired U.S. Navy Capt. David J. Carey is sprayed with champagne following his Freedom Flight at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas, April 10, 2025. The Freedom Flyer program, hosted by the 560th Flying Training Squadron, honors former Vietnam War aviator POWs with a ceremonial return to flight in a T-38 Talon. The post-flight champagne tradition celebrates the completion of this symbolic mission. Carey was shot down over North Vietnam in 1967 and spent nearly six years in captivity before his release during Operation Homecoming.
