In a change of command ceremony held at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph on August 16, 2024, Col. John P. Anderson officially took command of the 12th Operations Group from Col. James J. Muniz. The ceremony was attended by military personnel, civilian staff, and local dignitaries, marking the transition in unit leadership.

Anderson expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the 12th Operations Group. "To the men and women of the 12th Ops Group, I aim to serve you so you can forge the foundation of America's air power.” Anderson stated, “the job is as important today as it's ever been, as the country prepares to deter its competitors like the U.S. hasn't seen in over 30 years."

The 12th Operations Group is responsible for the training and development of aviators who are crucial to maintaining U.S. air superiority. The group oversees a range of specialized training programs, including Pilot Instructor Training, Introduction to Fighter Fundamentals, and Remotely Piloted Aircraft training. Under Col. Muniz’s leadership, the group has seen significant advancements in training methodologies and the integration of innovative technologies to enhance mission readiness.

Reflecting on his tenure, Col. Muniz shared his pride in the team he has led for the past two years. "I've been surrounded by some of the greatest patriots, experts in their own fields, and selflessness in their own drive to not only execute the mission but to do it safely and professionally," Muniz stated.

The change of command ceremony, steeped in military tradition, featured the passing of the unit’s guidon—a symbolic transfer of responsibility and authority. The event underscored the importance of leadership continuity in ensuring the ongoing success of the Air Force’s mission.

Anderson, who most recently served as the Chief of Future Operations Division, 9th Air Force at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, brings a wealth of experience in operational leadership and training. His vision for the 12th Operations Group emphasizes the importance of adaptability, innovation, and a relentless focus on the mission.
